Setting the Standard: Co-Creating Dell's Data Center Management Interface
Dell and Intel engaged Forge CEO Scott Davis to help revolutionize large-scale data center monitoring and management - predating Forge's incorporation. The challenge was significant: a powerful interface capable of providing actionable insights across thousands of devices, managing power utilization and thermal conditions, while meeting the complexity demands of global enterprise operations. It was also the first use of Dell's Clarity II Experience Ecosystem.
Impact & Outcomes
Delivered the Dell OpenManage Power Center - recognized by Dell executive leadership as setting a high standard for user-centred design in the industry. Reduced data center management operational costs and saved time and personnel resources for Dell's customers globally.
Challenge
The project combined three significant pressures simultaneously - an aggressive timeline, the first-time use of Dell's new Clarity II Experience Ecosystem, and the complexity of designing for massive data sets across a global, multi-disciplinary team. Requirements were rapidly evolving throughout delivery. The interface had to serve expert users managing thousands of devices while remaining navigable under high-pressure operational conditions.
Approach
A thorough user needs analysis preceded any design work. A range of concepts was generated - from advanced to traditional - deliberately balancing implementation complexity against real user requirements. Concepts were iteratively refined through structured collaboration with end-users, product management, Dell's central design group, and engineering. Detailed application architecture, workflow design, interaction design, and annotated wireframes were developed. Usability testing was integrated throughout, with iterative rounds of user feedback shaping every stage of design and development.
Delivery
The Dell OpenManage Power Center - a data center management application providing users and companies with critical infrastructure information through a highly efficient, user-friendly interface. The platform reduced operational costs, saved personnel resources, and was recognized by Dell executive leadership as an industry benchmark for user-centred design.
